ArmadilloCon et. al.

It’s been a while since the last update, and while there’s some neat stuff going on with regards to the Vernon Plaza Theater, it’s just business as usual on the other side of that. I’m struggling with a writing schedule, after spending almost 10 months without one. But I am working on things as my time allows. In fact, I’ll be reading one of those things at ArmadilloCon this weekend. Here’s my schedule, for those of you in attendance:

Sa1000De Expect Unexpected Evil
Sat 10:00 AM-11:00 AM DeWitt
Carl*, Gould, Kimbriel, Klages, Utley, Sturges, Finn
Sometimes our antagonists aren't always who they
appear to be. What are some of the most unusual
antagonists in literature and what tools did the
author use to make them that way?

Sa1200De Revolution SF
Sat Noon-1:00 PM DeWitt
Klaw*, Finn, Bey, Wilson, Blaschke, Porter
Being an editor for a small SF site can be
challenging.

Sa1500R Charity Auction
Sat 3:00 PM-5:00 PM Robertson
Finn*, Babcock
Last year we made a record amount of money for our
charity. Come by this year and help us spread the geek
love to the world!

Sa2200Dz What is the island?
Sat 10:00 PM-11:00 PM de Zavala
Babcock*, Davis, Levine, Nevins, Finn, Orive
For fans of Lost, this gives you a chance to discuss
the  show with other fans and professionals and hear
their  thoughts on what happened, will happen and
won't happen.

Su1000De Liar's Panel: Hard Science
Sun 10:00 AM-11:00 AM DeWitt
Lake*, Finn, Archer, McHugh, Nevins
Panelists attempt to come up with the most outrageous
claims about hard science in writing, films and
television.

Su1330R Reading
Sun 1:30 PM-2:00 PM Robertson
Mark Finn

Note that the reading is on Sunday, which is great for you, as there will be not much else going on, and shitty for me, in that I will most likely be hung over and hoarse. But if you haven’t attended a Finn reading, you need to do so, because I’m really really good at it.

Hope to see you there!

And here I'm missing Dillo Con this year!

Well, keep Klaw in line for me.

Have fun: as can be expected, I wouldn't be welcome there even if I had the time or the inclination to show.

I'm not sure why you feel that way, but I'm sorry you do. I personally love to have witty, intelligent people around at AC.

Sorry: it's just that yesterday was my wife's birthday, and this upcoming weekend is pretty much reserved for taking care of her. Besides, based on previous experiences with Armadillocons up to 2000, I had the distinct impression that I was about as popular out there as Jeffrey Dahmer at a vegetarian nudist colony, so I decided not to poke the badger any more. (I could also point to a decided allergy to listening to Lawrence Person jamming his tongue up Bruce Sterling's ass and then describing the taste sensation to passersby over a weekend, but I treat that allergy like my one to lobster and just stay away.)

Besides, you cited "witty, intelligent people," and we both know that for me to qualify, "witty" would have to be a synonym for "sociopathic" and "intelligent" a synonym for "painfully pedantic".

I totally get taking care of the wife!

BTW, I can't help but laugh at your description of the whole Lawrence/Bruce thing, although we don't get that anymore with Bruce living in Bulgaria or where ever it is he lives now. Not that I'm saying we miss it or anything.

Oh, and a lot has changed at AC since 2000 - I've chaired 4 of them since then (including this year's), and Kimm has chaired 2, so new blood and all that.

That's right: tempt me. If I could stand the thought of picking up a science fiction novel any more, if I thought the Czarina would want to go to Austin instead of buying her a beadmaking bench and appropriate equipment, and if I thought I could get through a few hours without setting Rick Klaw or Willie Siros on fire, I'd be there. Maybe next year?

Hahaha, I might give you the fuel! ;-)

AC will be around, so there's always next year.

Any chance of moving the convention back to Texas/OU weekend while you're at it? (Very seriously, the Czarina and I are talking with friends about heading that way the weekend of October 20: some friends want to crash the Maker Faire, and others want to crash the Society of Vertebrate Palaeontology annual meeting, and they're both the same weekend. Naturally, I'm going to both, so if you want to watch the terror, we'll see you out there.)

I think next year's convention is actually a week later, so maybe that is a better date for you.

Renee and I really whipped the con into shape. It is much more organized and quite relaxed.

Finny, no feeling me up during the charity auction. Remember, it's my late father's charity, and he'll be watching (and don't think he won't be able to make sure you are a gentleman with me).

BTW, I don't know if I'll have time to make the men's scarf I was planning to make for the auction, but the ladies' scarf is coming along nicely, and I think it would be a beautiful gift for Cathy - it's a gorgeous turquoise blue that would go great with her coloring. I'm just saying...

Finny, I will sacrifice my body to be felt up in lieu of Renee's.

Build me a matter transporter, stat!

Short of that, sadly, I cannot make it.

I may have all sorts of reasons to hie myself to Texas in nine months out of twelve in 2008, however.

Stay tuned.

Hey Mark,

You just gonna leave a brother hanging like Hurley? What was the general concensus of the LOST Island? (I heard it was Hawaii).
I wanted to send you my new email: johnnyjin28@yahoo.com and see how you are doing. I'll set up a real bloggy journal here soon enough, now that I am not afraid of my digital camera. First things to post, yep, pictures of the Hanuman - Indian Monkey God - statues that are all over town. Yes, I think of you a lot when we drive around town. I feel I have one friend who is entitled to the offerings the barefoot savages leave to their Simian Deity.

Write me when you can. I am completing my degree online through National University, San Diego, Going for Global Studies. Seemed oddly timely, and maybe it can get me a job with Torchwood.

Johnny

PS: Got a great Dueling Gigantor quasi Yin Yang tattoo in Singapore. Yeah. It's pretty cool. Yeah.
